Ice Pack Use Instructions

Purpose: Applying ice to your body does three things.

bullet

Reduces inflammation and swelling, both acute and chronic.

bullet

Breaks the pain/spasm cycle better than heat.

bullet

Provides pain relief by creating numbness.

Application: Freeze the ice pack at least one hour prior to use.

bullet

Place the ice pack in a pillow case.

bullet

Position yourself in a chair, floor or bed so there is firm contact between you and the ice.

bullet

Keep the ice on for 20-30 minutes. You can apply ice as often as 20 minutes out of every hour of the day but you need to let the body part warm up at least 30 minutes after each application.

Reactions:

When you first put the ice pack on it may prick, burn, and sting. This is a sign there is inflammation in the area which can keep your body’s natural healing mechanism from working.  People often find this initial reaction alarming and take the ice off. Please don’t give up!!! Years of experience has shown me that after  several (2-4) applications in a short period of time (12-24 hours) this initial reaction is gone and you will become numb in a few minutes, which is a normal reaction.
